Toner recycling – recycle, or refill and reuse.

Every laser printer contains at least one toner cartridge, and a colour printer has as many as four. IT-recycling immediately removes the toner from each laser printer when it arrives, so that the toner can be recycled. Toners are then kept separate from the rest of the printer, and sent to specialist toner recycling companies such as Parc-ink or Legecartridge.nl. Toner cartridges are easy to recycle. Toners from modern printers are refurbished and refilled, then sold as “compatible toners”; an inexpensive alternative to branded toners.
The powder (the actual toner) is removed from toners that can no longer be recycled. This powder is used in other toner cartridges. The rest (the plastic casing etc) is difficult to recycle, so unfortunately it has to be sent to the incinerator.
We also take the odd toner for recycling when we collect computer waste. However, if you have a substantial quantity, we recommend that you have them collected by a specialist toner recycling company such as Parc Ink, www.legecartridge.nl or marcscartridgecompany.nl/. It’s free in any case, and you might even receive money for them.
How should toners be handled?
Here are some tips on what you should do with old laser printers and the toners inside them:
- If you’re going to move old laser printers, do not put them on their side, as toner can then leak out with disastrous consequences.
- When handling toners, wear gloves and glasses. The black substance – the actual toner – is very harmful to health. It is also better not to smoke or drink when working with toners;
If a toner has made a mess, get out the vacuum cleaner right away. That works best.
