Due to worldwide burning of fossil fuels an enormous amount of CO2 is pumped into the atmosphere. Scientists are in agreement by now that this has to cause climate change. And this has become visible in many places in the world.
IT-recycling has decided to map out her contribution to CO2 emissions.
On the one hand our company activities contribute to CO2 emissions, and this is mainly caused by being on the road.
But on the other hand we also ensure a decrease in CO2 emissions. Because we recycle computer equipment. Recycling causes less CO2 emission than production from new natural resources.
So IT-recycling does cause CO2 emissions – mainly from being on the road – but on the other hand causes a decrease in CO2 emissions.
The goal of this CO2 footprint is first of all to get an insight into our CO2 management.

The largest part is caused by trucks used to pick up computer waste and to transport metal fractionations to recycling companies.

For every kilogram CO2 we emit, we also cause a decrease in CO2 emissions of 28,65 kilograms.
Improvements to our CO2 Footprint
What we ourselves could still improve in our CO2 footprint:
Obviously, to drive as few kilometres as possible and collect as much computer waste as possible is already an economic objective in the daily management of our company.
We have the most to gain from the trucks we drive. Currently, all our trucks meet the environmental norm euro5. So they are already very energy-efficient and to replace them would hardly have a positive CO2 effect.
A decrease in CO2 emissions by the trucks could be achieved from alternative fuels or hybrid technology. The technology for this, however, is still in its early stages and very costly.

We see an increase in the amount of computer waste we pick up but there is hardly any increase in CO2 emissions. Which means that the increase in kilometres driven with the trucks is minimal.
